On February 17, many Asian American families in the U.S. will celebrate the lunar New Year, the Year of the Horse. A traditional Chinese New Year’s dinner include whole fish, dumplings, big meat balls, whole chicken, spring rolls, rice cake and oranges. Each dish has a special meaning, related to wishing for enough food to eat, earning more money, getting a promotion, or getting good grades in school in the coming New Year. A New Years dinner for Chinese people is similar to the Thanksgiving dinner in the U.S. There is abundant, delicious food. Everyone returns home, if possible, to celebrate the New Year with close family members. Because plant based diet and Chinese restaurant food are popular, Mark and Joy will give a video tour of an Asian supermarket where you can find special cuts of meat, live fish, a large variety of vegetables, and sauces that are not available in a local supermarket.
