(10 Jan 1995) English/Nat Just two days before the Pope arrives in the Philippines, hundreds of thousands of people have attended the opening of World Youth Day. The pontiff will speak to youngsters in Manila on Sunday. The streets leading to Rizal Park in Manila were closed Tuesday to give way to 300 thousand youth delegates attending the opening ceremonies of World Youth Day '95. Holding flags and waving to onlookers, the delegates filled the streets by early afternoon on their way to the Opening Liturgy mass. It was standing room only for students and the religious, singing and praying with Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin. World Youth Day comes just two days before the Papal visit in a country dominated by Catholics but in a region where Christianity remains the minority. SOUND BITE: "We see around us the faces of our people, our people in their hour of awakening, we see a continent where the history of the new age of humankind is even now being written." SUPER CAPTION: Jaime Cardinal Sin, Archbishop of Manila. Creating the most enthusiasm, singing and dancing to tunes written specially for the conference. Darkness fell before the Archbishop completed final proceeding by breaking bread and praying for the young people of the world. SOUNDBITE: "We're on a pilgrimage, we're here....its part of our journey about faith. We're here to meet other people, we're here to share our faith with others and to grow ourselves. SUPER CAPTION: Rita Campbell, Australian delegate. SOUNDBITE: "I think its wonderful just getting to have the chance.....(to see the pope), and to know that I'm not just in one country, but there are many other people in the world.
