A customer came to me complaining of brake noise; a "clank" when the brakes were applied. I went for a test drive and didn't hear anything. When I placed the car in reverse to park the car and applied the brakes, "clank"! Then I shifted to "drive", went a few feet and applied the brakes; "clank"! Ah ha! Loose brake pad abutment clips! When these metal clips get "tired" or loose their tensile strength, the upper and lower "ears" of the brake pad shift their position in the caliper bracket. The abutment clips act as a spring to cushion the shifting the the pads when transitioning from drive to reverse and visa versa. The easy fix is to simply replace them. When purchasing new brake pads, it's always a good idea to replace the abutment clips with the pads. Although the clips may be okay with the new pads, over time the clips can wear out by loosing their tensile strength. Higher quality brake pad kits come with new abutment clips. Check the packaging of the new pads to make sure they come with new abutment clips.
