Rajasthan Diaries Day 4 Part 3: Finally - Mehrangarh Fort! One of India's largest and most magnificent forts, Mehrangarh towers 400 feet above Jodhpur. Built in 1459, this massive fort has stood for over 500 years - and walking through it, you understand why it's considered one of the finest forts in all of India. 🏰 About Mehrangarh Fort: Built in 1459 by Rao Jodha (founder of Jodhpur) Sits 400 feet above the city on a rocky hill Massive walls up to 120 feet high and 70 feet wide Houses palaces, courtyards, museums with royal artifacts Offers THE best views of Jodhpur's blue houses The fort is enormous - we spent hours exploring the palaces, courtyards, and ramparts. The architecture is stunning: intricate carvings, latticed windows (jalis), painted ceilings, mirrored rooms. Every corner reveals something new. But the views? Breathtaking. From the fort walls, you can see the entire Blue City spread out below - thousands of blue-painted houses creating this incredible sea of color against the desert landscape. The audio guide (included with ticket) was excellent - it tells the history, stories of battles, royal intrigue, and life inside the fort. Highly recommend getting it. Mehrangarh Fort is a must-visit in Jodhpur. It's massive, beautiful, and gives you the best perspective on why this city is called the Blue City. After three parts exploring Jodhpur, next up: onward to Udaipur!
