I was called for a rescue around 10pm to a home where the bat flew into their backyard and couldn't get out. I call these places Desert Backyards. They're surrounded by unclimbable fences (metal) and they have no trees or ways for the batties to get out, just grass, metal sheds, paving and a clothes line. It wasn't difficult to figure out why Crinoline ended up in the backyard - she had the most humungous baby on her (or as Maggie would say - hugemongous). Her baby, Petticoat, was 9 weeks old and a booffy big boy. It's no wonder she was struggling for height. So the pair of them are in care. Crinoline was clearly going somewhere with her baby (instead of leaving him in the colony overnight); perhaps she was going somewhere where there was more food, and colony hopping to find a better location. Wherever she was going, to release her and her baby quickly might have meant she attempted the same trip again after release, and perhaps had an even worse outcome, so she is remaining in care until baby Petticoat is flying independently (in a few weeks). They will be released through the release aviary which is opening up just after Christmas, Their names? The street was Crinan Street and for some reason that always reminds me of the Crimean, and of crinolines. The baby's name another type of undergarment, a little coat, which used to be a male undergarment. My brain works in mysterious ways. I did try to get more footage of the pair of them but the carer has about 5 mums with babies in that cage, and they're all skittish and fed stressed if you approach the cage and look at them, let alone hold a camera. You'll have to be satisfied that they're all doing well. I did see Po and her baby Popo and Undine and her baby Naiad in the cage. They're doing well. (to find videos of Po and Undine, search in the YT search bar for Megabattie/Po and Megabattie/Undine).
