IF I SHOULD LOSE YOUR LOVE, The Sophomores, Dawn #228 1957 Flipside: I JUST CAN’T KEEP THE TEARS FROM TUMBLIN DOWN – Here is another really great unknown ballad from my music collection. The Sophomores hailed from Roxbury, Massachusetts. Group members were Johnny Mack, Eddie Brooks, Al Chambers and Donald Clements. They started out singing and performing in 1954 in the Roxbury section of Boston calling themselves “The Five Stars Of Love” (they were only 4 members, who knows why “Five Stars”?) The group appeared at many local nightspots. One night at “The Show Bar” group member Al Chambers walked off the stage swearing that he was leaving show business for good! He was replaced by Roland Clements, Donald’s brother who had formerly been with The Dappers on Peacock. In 1955 the group named itself The Sophomores and soon caught the interest of Jack Darwin of Dawn Records. Darwin set up a recording date in New York City. Following the recording session, they continued with their appearances at local night clubs. Besides recording 6 singles and an album for Dawn Records, they had releases for Chord Records and Epic Records. Even without achieving a hit record, they stayed together through the 1960s and then disbanded. Enjoy this really great unknown ballad “IF I SHOULD LOSE YOUR LOVE” by The Sophomores, Boston doowop at its finest!
