Let us remain in Europe for a few more evenings and turn our gaze to Switzerland. After the fall of the Glimmerlight, the synthesist Marc Disler adopted Swiss subroutines (like Andreas Vollenweider). In the 1980s, Disler recorded a series of cassettes collectively titled Silence. Disler held, as did the Sagegazer Joanna Brouk, that all music originates in silence. While walking the Alpine paths with his Blue Crystal and Oberheim, he was often heard quietly repeating Brouk’s axiom: that all music rises and falls from the infinite source of silence. . . . Disler understood, as Brouk had, that silence was not emptiness but a tuning field. By settling into one’s own inner quiet, he believed, the larger harmonics could be perceived - the music of the spheres, the low hum beneath matter, the distant songs of the cosmos. At least five cassettes are known to belong to the Silence cycle. Among them, Silence II is most often regarded as the clearest transmission, where the boundary between sound and its origin nearly disappears. . . . The Sagegazer knows that only by listening deeply enough to silence can the universe be heard speaking back. 0:00 Scigno 9:11 Waves 23:23 Bamboo 31:36 Mani 37:42 Return
