Historically, Chikan has been inhabited by fishermen since the Tang Dynasty and flourished as a trade hub during the Ming and Qing Dynasties due to its port, becoming a vital node on the ancient Maritime Silk Road. In 1899, after France leased Guangzhou Bay (now Zhanjiang), Chikan became the administrative and commercial center under French rule, leaving behind numerous colonial-era buildings. It was reintegrated into China in 1945 post-WWII. Economically, the district focuses on service industries, modern services, electronics, and biopharmaceuticals, with major commercial zones like Jinsha Bay and Shimao, alongside industrial parks such as Chikan Innovation Park. Its transportation network benefits from proximity to Zhanjiang Port and highways like the Shenyang-Haikou Expressway.
