UNDERSTANDING THE DIVINE LOVE OF GOD The word "divine" refers to that which pertains to, proceeds from, or possesses the nature, attributes, and power of God. It signifies a heavenly or Godlike quality, distinct from human limitations, representing divine power (2 Peter 1:3), nature (2 Peter 1:4), or the Godhead. It describes things that belong to or reflect God’s holiness, omniscience, and omnipotence. Divine love is an unconditional, infinite, and sacrificial force central to the Christian faith, stemming from God’s nature rather than human merit. It offers eternal, unchanging security, serving as the foundation for morality and encouraging believers to reflect this love toward others. It is not merely affection but an active, empowering force that seeks humanity's highest spiritual good. The Divine love is called Agape in the Scriptures. It is derived from Greek; it Scripturally denotes a selfless, unconditional love. In Biblical practice, agape represents the highest form of love and is often associated with True Will and the central tenet of the religion: "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Agape love is filled with kindness and wants only the best for the other person. Agape love accepts others unconditionally, with no expectations of being reciprocated. Agape love sacrifices for the good of the other person In John 3: 16 (reading from the Message Bible), the Divine Love was introduced in the New Testament, it states, "This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because that person failed to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him." "Greater love hath no man" (John 15:13, King James Version), which states that there is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends, frequently cited in contexts of supreme sacrifice. Romans 5:5, the phrase indicates that God's love is not just known intellectually, but actively, richly poured into believers' hearts by the Holy Spirit. This divine love provides secure hope, serves as evidence of God's grace, and enables believers to love Him and others in return. The Divine love is Unconditional; it is the act of loving a person completely without limitations, strings attached, or requirements for reciprocity. It is an unwavering and freely given affection that persists regardless of circumstances, mistakes, or behaviors. Often exemplified by parental love, it involves total acceptance, patience, and wanting the best for the other person. Understanding the love of God in the Scriptures is for gaining divine wisdom, enabling believers to discern God’s will, apply truth to life, and grow spiritually. It transforms, rather than just informs, leading to a life that pleases God, bears fruit, and avoids error, acting as a gift for interpreting and following His Word. God's unconditional love, often referred to as agape, is an unwavering, undeserved, and infinite affection that is not based on human performance, behavior, or merit. This love is constant, even when individuals falter, and was demonstrated through the sacrificial gift of Jesus Christ while humanity was still in sin. It is a proactive, forgiving love that exists regardless of mistakes, offering security, value, and a personal relationship with the Creator. The New Testament emphasizes that God’s love is unconditional, sacrificial, and inseparable from the believer, demonstrated most clearly through Jesus Christ's death while humanity was still sinful. Key verses highlight that "God is love" (1 John 4:8),, offer eternal life to believers (John 3:16), and confirm that nothing can separate believers from this love (Romans 8:37-39). Understanding God’s love will save us, understanding it will increase our assurance in God, and our relationship with Him; not understanding it will put us under the deception and lies of satan. The test of true love is obedience to God— our response to God’s “Love works with trust (Faith) and obedience or the obedience of faith.” To that end, Love must be obedient, for it is clear that an insolent love cannot work. There must be heart in our love, and the Spirit of God breathing in it, or it will not be the living love of a living child of God.
