Some people know Professor Ellen from "boterhammen in de bib" ("Sandwiches at the Library") in Kortrijk, but in academic circles she is well known for her research in aquatic ecology and evolutionary biology and to her students as teacher in animal diversity, animal biology and ecology. Her research focus concerns the evolutionary "red queen" dynamics between water-fleas and the Daphnia-parasite. In a race of arms and defence, they have to keep adapting because running is the only way to keep in place. If you've never heard of the red queen: go read Lewis Carrol's "Through the looking-glass" now. We think that someone who both publishes in Nature and gives lectures at a kids university knows where her towel is*: on the TEDxFlanders Stage! *more on towels: read Douglas Adams after you're finished with Lewis Carrol. Recorded on September 5th 2010 at the Zoo of Antwerp. More information: www.tedxflanders.be About TEDx In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
