There haven't been a lot of Official Competitions for this generation so far, at least compared to the previous generation. By this point in Generation VIII, we've had Galar Newcomers, 2020 International Challenge (February 2020), Extreme Speed! Single Battles!, International Challenge (May 2020), and Armor Beginnings. So far in Generation IX, we've had Paldea Prologue and Global Challenges 2023 I, II, and III. Granted, gimmick events tend to be further into a generation than Extreme Speed! Singles Battles! was (even compared to generations prior), and I think they're waiting for both the Pokémon World Championships to end and for The Secret of Area Zero to bring more Pokémon in before they really start to hold more of them. But whatever happened to Global Challenge 2023 IV? You were given a Poké Ball Backpack, then a Great Ball Backpack, then an Ultra Ball Backpack. Where's the Master Ball Backpack? Type: Double Battle Opponent: Ant Battle Court: Medali Music: The Top Champion My Pokémon: Dupré (Medicham), Winton (Avalugg) (Hisuian), Templeton (Spiritomb), Roland (Electrode) (Kantonian) Opponent's Pokémon: Shreder (Cyclizar), Phantom (Gengar), eneroar (Noivern), the enraged (Annihilape) Cyclizar is one of the poster Pokémon for how something might work very well in the full team battles of Pokémon Showdown but not work in the official games due to differences in rules. And that's because Cyclizar has both Shed Tail, a move where one-half of a Pokémon's HP is sacrificed (rounded up, so a Pokémon can't use Shed Tail again without healing) and switches out, and a Substitute doll is placed there for the for the incoming Pokémon; and Regenerator, which is why Cyclizar is favored over Orthworm (though Orthworm is a tough battler for other reasons too). Battling with a full team in single battles will involve a lot of switching in and out, so a Pokémon that facilitates that is golden, while switching is a lot riskier in the official games, so even something like Shed Tail combined with Regenerator is oftentimes not worth it. (Besides that, Cyclicar seems like the sort of Pokémon that's happier with humans on its back than when battling. The Violet Pokédex entry mentions how Cyclizar likes transporting humans around because the human's body heat warms it up and provides it with companionship.) Nevertheless, that Shed Tail made the Substitut'e recipient, Noivern, a lot more troublesome than I would've liked, even when Avalugg's sitting right there. I used a Noivern last generation as part of the Arctovish Team, and that Noivern was a key part of making the team work. Tailwind was a part of that strategy, and I expected Tailwind here too, which is why I selected Spiritomb, using Trick Room to counter Tailwind. As it seems, Noivern did not use Trick Room, but with a Speed of 123, Noivern's faster than I'd like an opposing Pokémon to be, so I think it was the right call to use Trick Room anyway. Meanwhile, Gengar was very fond of using Destiny Bond, including doing so on sight of Spiritomb. That tells me that Gengar doesn't have a Focus Sash, is Speed oriented, and doesn't plan to Terastallize. But it also shows how very tricky it is to use Destiny Bond in a double battle, especially once it's used unsuccessfully. All you have to do is focus on the other Pokémon, at least until they get enough doubts that they use some other move. For the record, Destiny Bond, since Generation VI, cannot be used successfully consecutively. If you use Destiny Bond two turns in a row. the second one will always fail. This is probably to address problems Destiny Bond had prior with stalling, such as via Toxic or Perish Song. Interestingly, this Cyclizar appears to have Shed Skin rather than Regenerator. Perhaps they couldn't get a Cyclizar with its Hidden Ability and couldn't secure any Ability Patches, or it was a personal preference of Shed Skin over Regenerator--which is not without merit in a double battles, considering how prevalent Amoonguss and Breloom are with Sleep-inducing Spore. The presence of Skeledirge suggests this may be a story team, though you'd need a lot of commitment to evolve Noibat into Noivern, considering the low levels you find them and that they evolve at Level 48. Or you can stumble across one in North Province Areas One or Two, or get one in a Tera Raid Battle. I'm guessing the nicknames are straightforward as they are, at least with Gengar and Annihilape. Cyclizar's nickname of "Shreder" more likely comes from "shredder," to refer to a motorcycle rather than the archnemesis of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I don't know where "eneroar" comes from.
