Priya Kumar, PNC Technologies Career Development Professor, presents “Partnering with Youth in Technology Research." From online games to Chromebooks to AI chatbots, computing technologies touch nearly every facet of children’s lives. Over the past decade, Dr. Kumar has used a variety of research methods — including interviews, co-design, and participatory action research — to work with children and explore how they navigate the digital environment. Currently, Dr. Kumar is collaborating with high school student Khushi Khurana to develop a model of youth-led STEM learning based on Khushi’s experience creating and running a set of coding and AI camps for K-12 students. In this talk, Dr. Kumar and Khushi will explain why youth voices need to be included in technology scholarship and offer suggestions to researchers who are interested in working with youth. Dr. Priya Kumar is the PNC Technologies Career Development Assistant Professor in Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology. She conducts theory-driven, qualitative research on the connections between digital technologies and the social practices of communication and learning, with a focus on privacy. Her research has been featured in media outlets that include The New York Times, NPR, NBC, CNN and Slate, and her TEDx talk on children’s privacy has garnered more than 22,000 views on YouTube. Dr. Kumar is also a non-resident fellow with the Center for Democracy and Technology and a faculty affiliate with Penn State’s Center for Socially Responsible Artificial Intelligence. She designs and runs youth coding camps that use peer learning and hands-on projects to make computing more approachable for middle and high school students. Her work in expanding these programs led to her TEDx talk on peer-led computer science education, where she was the youngest speaker ever featured at that event. She’s also a coxswain for Cooper Junior Rowing Club and actively volunteers at Hindi school, supporting younger students as they learn the language and stay connected to their cultural roots.
