Our session with Ben Salter was one of those friendly meetings in which time just swept over our head. This successful Aussie has been doing this for years but he has clearly maintained a sense of humility, regardless of his expert ability to get under your skin by melody. It was an earnest performance from a genuine guy and we are certainly chuffed to have him on the channel. Ben Salter describes his music as ‘Epic Folk’ but there is certainly an element of punk in there too. We got a stripped back version of his song 'Isolationism' from 2017 album ‘Back Yourself’ which you can listen to in full on Spotify. What’s your story? (e.g. how did you form and where are you at?) I’ve been playing in various bands and what not for around twenty years, in a variety of styles - everything from hard rock to country and bluegrass stuff. But around ten years ago I decided to make the solo stuff the main focus. I’ve released three solo albums as well as a few live things and an EP, and toured through Europe, Japan and New Zealand, as well as Australia. How would you describe the genre? (Perhaps include your playing style and influences) This is always a tricky question to answer for me - on my records my style varies considerably, from rock to folk to sort of semi-experimental kind of stuff. But when I play live it’s generally just me and an acoustic guitar with some loops and what not. So I just call it ‘epic folk’. It’s a pain trying to classify your music! I guess what I do isn’t that left of centre. It’s pretty melancholy, literary, ornate sort of music I suppose. I’m told my voice has a lot to do with my limited appeal but I’m not buying it. What’s the ambition? I just want to be able to travel around the world and make music and never die. It’s not that much to ask. Music aside, what do you like to do together? The usual I guess.. read books. Travel. Play video games. Get drunk from time to time. I am also inordinately fond of watching Antiques Roadshow.
