Solstice (Brian Kunde) A choral setting of a sonnet written by Brian Kunde in 2024. Brian Kunde is a prolific American poet and author of many short stories. This work is one of his many poems that explore traditional forms. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The night comes earlier these days, and those Who work leave off their laborings, and roam To wait the weeks in which the darkness grows With kin, within the shelter of the home. Death’s fingers stretch, and pull the cold in close To twitch the mortal tapers of their light— Dash from our mouths the mug of our life dose, And spill it in libation to the blight. Yet in the foe’s full strength is found the sign His tide, brought to its height, must pull away Before the year restored—that soon the wine Shall toast the victory of the quickened day. His star gleams in the sky; beneath, He’s born, The living promise of resurgent morn.
