After a brief reunion with his family, Tenzin set out on the long journey back to his monastery. The distance was 3,000 kilometers, yet he chose to travel on foot. To him, measuring the world with his own steps is itself a form of practice, because he knows all too well that the road here is narrow, treacherous, and uncomfortably close to life and death. Three thousand kilometers— he has no idea how long it will take, nor can he be certain that he will arrive safely. Beside a stretch of mountain road stands an unremarkable memorial. Carved into it are the names of the dead and the dates they died, along with the reasons they lost their lives. Far below, in the depths of the valley, a wrecked car lies in silence, a wordless warning to everyone who passes by: this road shows no mercy. Loose gravel shifts beneath his feet. In winter, when ice covers the ground, the path becomes almost a gamble with death. “If I slip here, I could lose my life,” Tenzin says calmly. For monks like him, death itself is not frightening. Tenzin believes that if misfortune befalls him in this life, it is simply the consequence of actions from the past.
