In this foundational sociological study, Pierre Bourdieu argues that aesthetic taste is not a natural gift but a product of social and educational conditioning that serves to reinforce class hierarchies. By analysing statistical data on cultural preferences, he demonstrates that "legitimate" taste in art and music is inextricably linked to educational capital and social origin, functioning as a tool for the dominant class to assert its social distinction. He identifies a fundamental conflict between a "pure" aesthetic disposition, which focuses on formal style and detached contemplation, and a "popular" aesthetic, which prioritises the function, morality, and emotional resonance of a work. This "game of culture" allows those with inherited cultural capital to mask their privilege as an innate "natural" nobility, effectively excluding those from lower social strata who lack the necessary habitus to navigate high-society markets. Ultimately, the text reveals how everyday choices in art, food, and clothing are subtle strategies of refusal and distinction that maintain the boundaries between social classes.
