Driveline Forensics: Rear Drive Axle and Driveshaft Removal

Cristy Lee removes the rear drive axle and driveshaft on a Mack Anthem tractor. Please watch video for complete instructions. Prep vehicle to shop safety specifications. Disconnect the battery. Mark connections. Remove lug nuts and pull the tires. Drain oil from axle housing. Pull axle shaft nuts from the hubs and fully remove axle shafts. Release the park brakes to cage air chambers. Take off calipers. Remove spindle nut that holds the hub and take hub off the axle. Note the clocking of the torque backing plates so the orientation is correct when replacing. Unbolt and remove torque plates from axle flange. Unbolt and drop prop shaft from drive head. Secure axle with lifting straps. Remove shock hardware. Unbolt upper torque rod. Remove u-bolts. Lower axle housing to the floor and remove it from under vehicle. Get the driveshaft out. Noose driveline with safety strap. Unbolt carrier bearing and mounting hardware at transmission rear. Lower and carry with an assistant. #DrivelineForensics
