VOC Heritage in Asia: The Dutch Burghers of Ceylon | Melbourne 8 June 2019 Exhibition Highlights

VOC heritage in Asia: The Ceylon Dutch Burghers, presented its first exhibition in Melbourne, Australia on 8 June 2019. The second event will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, followed by the third event in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The final presentation will be held in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Due to the COVID19 virus all events are on a waiting list. These exhibitions evolved from the study of company men in service with the Dutch mercantile company De Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) in Ceylon. During this research, we realised the material would also merit an exhibition featuring the history of the Ceylon Dutch Burghers. The accompanying twin books will be commercially available by 2023 or 2024. The first volume consists on, historical accounts of Dutch VOC in the 18th century in Asia and its decline. The second volume features mainly Ceylon, and the other settlements followed by illustrations, maps, coat of arms, paintings. In addition to the summaries of family ancestry of the servicemen their company credentials, occupations and posts which end around 1820. Historian Martijn Maarleveld consulted primary sources to validate documentation on material from the maritime VOC archives around the globe, in addition to the church registers, testaments, state and family archives and literature, thus creating a unique presentation on the social demographics of the VOC period settlements.
