What is a weep hole? You may have seen these small vertical gaps located between your bricks and wondered what on Earth they're for. While they may look like a mistake on the builder's part, these small holes play an incredibly important role in the moisture management of your brick home. Weep holes allow moisture that is trapped in the cavity between your internal and external walls to drain and help to keep this space ventilated and dry. And this is important! If water is trapped in these cavities and can't escape, it can lead to mold and mildew which can cause significant damage to the timber wall studs and other building materials inside your walls. And this can lead to costly repairs! But on the flip side, weep holes can also provide pests with an open door into your home. If left unprotected, pests like mice and cockroaches can use them to gain access to food sources and shelter. Understanding what is a weep hole and knowing how important they are will help you to avoid the common mistake of simply filling in or completely sealing your weep holes to prevent pests. That should never be done! In this video, we’ll explain what is a weep hole as well as look at how they can be protected in a way that does not impede their functionality.
