In this video, I visualized every Sears store opening and closure across the United States (from the 1920s to 2025). The dataset is based on publicly available records of Sears’ store history, capturing the century-long story of the company’s growth, dominance, and eventual decline. The animation shows each store appearing on the map as it opens, then disappearing when it closes. A counter tracks the total number of open stores over time, while a racing bar chart highlights the states with the most locations. Together, they illustrate how Sears expanded into nearly every corner of the country, became a household name, and then steadily shrank in the face of changing retail landscapes. The underlying data was compiled by Ben Schultz. If you're interested in stories of retail decline, he’s published a book on Kmart, which you can find here: https://www.amazon.com/Attention-Kmar.... Note, I’m not affiliated with Ben Schultz in any way; just giving well-deserved credit and a shout-out to his work on both Sears and Kmart. Check out my Kmart video here: • The Rise and Fall of Kmart, Mapped (1962-2... Because Sears’ historical records are not complete, several assumptions had to be made to fill in the gaps in the data. Here’s how missing information was handled: When only the year was known, a random month and day were chosen. When the month was known but not the exact day, a random day was chosen. If a store was known to have closed but no exact date was available, the closure was imputed based on the average lifetime of Sears stores in that state. In cases where two stores in the same city appeared to follow one another (e.g. a closure and reopening within the same year), the opening date of the new location was adjusted to immediately follow the closure of the old one, ensuring a logical timeline. Still-open stores: A handful of locations still in operation were manually confirmed and marked as open through 2025. These choices don’t make the dataset perfect, but ensure the overall trends remain accurate, even if a handful of day-to-day details are approximate.
