In this video, I visualized every Target store opening and closure across the United States. The dataset is based on publicly available records of Target’s store history, capturing the full rise of the chain over six decades. The animation shows each store appearing on the map as it opens, then disappearing when it closes. A counter tracks the total number of open stores over time, while a racing bar chart highlights the states with the most locations. Together, they illustrate how Target expanded rapidly to become a retail giant. To make the animation smoother, large clusters of stores that officially opened on the exact same day were randomly distributed over a short surrounding window of days. This avoids sudden jumps and gives a more continuous sense of growth while still staying faithful to the underlying data. The underlying data was compiled by Ben Schultz. If you’d like to dive deeper into the story of retail in the USA, Ben has published a book on Kmart’s decline, which you can find here: https://www.amazon.com/Attention-Kmar.... Note, I’m not affiliated with Ben Schultz in any way, just giving well-deserved credit and a shout-out to their work. Have an idea for a future topic? Let me know in the comments.
