McDonald’s Global Expansion, Mapped (1940–2025)

In this video, I visualized the global spread of McDonald’s from the first store in San Bernardino, California (1940) to the present day, using McDonald's corporate data via Wikipedia. The dataset captures both its rapid expansion into new countries and the moments when it exited particular markets. Each pin marks the very first McDonald’s in a country. As the animation plays, countries turn red when McDonald’s enters and grey when it departs. A counter tracks the total number of countries and territories with McDonald’s over time, while a timeline shows the rise, peak, and occasional retreats of one of the world’s most recognizable brands.
