An inspiring opening to Day 3 of the Conference, beginning with a data-rich national picture from Social Value Portal, moving into a civic welcome, followed by a mission-critical keynote panel and a powerful personal story. Across all sessions, the call was clear: Social Value must be bold, human and collaborative if it is to meet the scale of today’s challenges. The State of the Nation Guy Battle, CEO, Social Value Portal Anna McChesney-Gordon, Chief Strategy Officer, Social Value Portal Opening Derrick Anderson CBE, Lord-Lieutenant of the West Midlands Panel: Mission Critical: How can we better collaborate to deliver real and lasting Social Value? Chair: Arnab Dutt OBE, National Policy Champion for Procurement & Social Value, Federation of Small Businesses Ed Boyd, Co-Founder & CEO, ReGenerate John O'Brien (MBE), Chairman & Founder, Anthropy Jean Templeton, Chief Executive, St. Basils Inspiring Story Izzie Everest The challenge Guy Battle and Anna McChesney-Gordon set out a clear national picture: deepening child poverty, rising inequality, strained public services – and yet, a Social Value movement generating billions in measurable impact. The question threaded through the morning: how do we move from isolated effort to collective, long-term action? Stats to remember 4.5 million children live in poverty, our prison system is operating at 99% ,capacity and 1,600 people who don’t have a home died last year. However, £32 billion pounds in fully validated Social Value has been delivered since 2020, with £60 billion reported in total. This translates to 300,000 local jobs, around £100 million spent with VCFSEs, and 2.4 million tonnes of carbon saved. Key themes and insights While poverty, health inequalities, and climate threats are all growing problems, Social Value is delivering real outcomes. The Lord-Lieutenant urged delegates to recognise that everyone has a role in strengthening social fabric and regional resilience. Lasting impact comes from breaking down silos, from businesses employing differently to charities shaping policy. Systems change requires cultural change – empathy, lived experience and long-term trust. “Behind every pound or dollar of Social Value, behind every unit of delivery, is a real person whose life has been changed for the better.” Anna McChesney-Gordon, Chief Strategy Officer, Social Value Portal Next steps from the experts Treat Social Value as long-term nation-building, not contract-compliance Invest in data that highlights people, not just metrics Build cross-sector alliances with shared outcomes and accountability Create more inclusive routes into employment, skills and community leadership
