(13 Jul 1996) German/Nat Hundreds of thousands of revellers have poured into Berlin for a festival billed as one of Germany's biggest post-war public gatherings. This year's Love Parade techno-music festival is expected to attract at least half a (m) million people. Riot police are on alert but fears the party could get out of hand are eased by the 70 (m) million U-S dollars it is expected to bring in. Hundreds of thousands of people were dancing in Berlin Saturday in a festival billed as one of Germany's biggest post-war public gatherings. Floats and trucks containing revellers made their way down the streets as the ravers celebrated the eighth annual Love Parade. Altogether, there were about 40 flatbed trucks with sound systems thundering through the town centre. And organisers say more than half a (m) million people joined in to dance to the booming beat of techno-music. But it wasn't just the young who had turned up - the older generation was well presented. This year's theme for the gathering was "We are one family". Organisers said the theme highlighted their believe that tolerance and lust for life would pave the way to a peaceful world. The Love Parade tradition started in the summer of 1989, when some 150 ravers took part in the event. Back then, they danced behind a Volkswagen van under the motto "Peace, Happiness and Pancakes". But the annual party has grown dramatically in recent years - last year alone a quarter of a (m) million people made their way to Berlin. On Saturday, some had come to join in the party - but others just wanted to see what all the fuss was about. SOUNDBITE: (German) "Well we live in Berlin but normally we have nothing to do with techno. But we had to come because now we have a child it's really good." SUPER CAPTION: VOXPOP The Parade route had been changed from the Kurfuerstendamm, Berlin's main shopping thoroughfare, to a less-congested boulevard through the Tiergarten park. Even so, the streets were simply packed. SOUNDBITE: (German) "The atmosphere is great, the problem is that right up there you can't walk with the floats - it's just too full." SUPER CAPTION: VOXPOP The Love Parade is not only Germany's largest post-war gathering, it's also described as the world's biggest rave event for fans of techno-music. People had came from as far away as Japan and Australia for the party. But it wasn't just revellers that had travelled to Berlin - MTV Europe carried the event live for the first time.
