Writing diminutions, or divisions, was a common way of embellishing music in the Renaissance - longer notes would be divided into shorter values to make the melody more beautiful and virtuosic. This month I've been writing my own diminutions on Renaissance music, and here I take you through the process of how I did it! I take you through three sources: 'La Fontegara' by Sylvestro Ganassi (1535) 'Trattado de Glosas' by Diego Ortiz (1533) De Fluyten Lust-Hof by Jacob van Eyck (1644) Of course, you don't have to use these! There are many other sources, and you can also just write your own completely from scratch. These are just a few to get you started. Yep, I know the van Eyck is from a bit later, but it's always fun to mix it up a little ;) My piece was based upon Canzonetta 'La Grave' by Giuseppe Guami. ////// SUPPORT TEAM RECORDER ON PATREON A small monthly donation to Team Recorder will help this channel to grow, and you get great rewards too! / teamrecorder In this video I play upon a soprano in C at 466 and an alto in F at 466 by Peter van der Poel.
