Thawing permafrost will significantly impact regulatory activities in Alaska that are conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to protect human health and the environment. Many of those activities are in vulnerable rural lands predominantly occupied by Alaska Natives; EPA carefully considers the potential impacts of waste to subsistence waters and food resources during project evaluations and permitting decisions. This discussion will focus on how EPA staff tabulated available internal and external data sources, identified data and knowledge gaps and how permafrost thaw is impacting EPA decision-making in Alaska. EPA is continually soliciting more information and data from its partners to improve its understanding of the natural environment and to bolster human health protections to support Alaskans.
