Although water makes up over 70% of the earth’s surface, only about 1% of it is considered freshwater. This means that only a tiny percentage of the world’s water supply is suitable for drinking or usage in virtually any application. For this reason, less than 1/9 human beings in the world have access to safe drinking water, with the number of water-stressed regions increasing due to overpopulation and climate change. To combat this growing problem, the leaders of the world are turning to the process of desalination. Desalination works by targeting the ocean and converting seawater into clean drinking water through the removal of salts and other unwanted impurities. Many regions are seeing the construction of large-scale desalination plants next to the world’s oceans to produce millions of gallons of water for consumption. Desalination plants help to lessen pressure on limited freshwater sources, and unlike other water treatment solutions, do not depend on unmanageable factors such as the climate. Desalination plants utilize advanced technology that includes high-rejection reverse osmosis technology, energy recovery features, and state-of-the-art PLC control systems. These systems are designed to deliver great reliability, efficiency, and maximum performance with low operating costs. Since seawater is an everlasting resource, even during times of droughts, the implementation of desalination will never become compromised by climate change or other threatening events. While the costs of building and managing desalination plants are currently very expensive, it is likely to be decreased as water treatment technology continues to advance in the future. Pure Aqua has designed and manufactured two desalination systems that produce a total of 1 MGD and are capable of handling extremely high TDS (up to 45,000mg/l).
