The islands of UT Lakshadweep are facing scarcity of drinking quality water due to increase in the population and uneven distribution of rainfall. Rain water harvesting and the Reverse Osmosis technology were attempted, but could not be sustained due to difficulty in its maintenance. ESSO-NIOT has successfully implemented Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) that uses the naturally available temperature gradient of 16°C in ocean between two water bodies to evaporate the warm water at low pressures ( 27 milli bar) and condense the resultant vapour using colder water to obtain fresh water. The Technology is completely indigenous, robust, environmentally friendly and requires very less effort in operation and maintenance. ESSO-NIOT initiated Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD), as a part of its research activities since 2000 and set up 100Cubicmeter/day in Kavaratti Island. Subsequently, two more plants in islands of Minicoy and Agatti were commissioned during 2011 and these plants are being maintained by islanders for past 6 years. While executing these plants in two distinct islands, ESSO-NIOT has evolved site specific techniques in design and installation of marine structure and deep sea coldwater pipe. A video on challenges faced during implementation of these two plants is given. https://www.niot.res.in/index.php/nod... http://www.moes.gov.in/
