Lyricist: Benjamin Beddome Composer: Lowell Mason The text was written by Benjamin Beddome (1717-1795) whose practice was to prepare a hymn every week to be sung by his congregation after his sermon on Sunday morning. The date he wrote it is not known, but it may have been somewhere between 1767 and 1787. It was first published posthumously in Hymns Adapted to Public Worship or Family Devotion, now first published from the Manuscripts of the late Rev. B. Beddome, M.A. (1817), where it contained 830 of his poems. The tune that is most associated with Beddome's text is GERAR. It is attributed to Lowell Mason (1792-1872) and is dated 1839. It has been used with many different texts over the years but “God is the Fountain Whence” seems to be the most popular. Beddome’s hymn originally began, “Love is the fountain whence.” The change was possibly made by E. L. Jorgenson when he needed a hymn beginning with the word “God” to fit the alphabetical arrangement of his Great Songs of the Church (1921). - ~Lyrics~ 1. God is the fountain whence Ten thousand blessings flow; To Him my life, my health, and friends, And ev’ry good, I owe. 2. The comforts He affords Are neither few nor small; He is the source of fresh delights, My portion and my all. 3. He fills my heart with joy, My lips attunes for praise; And to His glory I’ll devote The remnant of my days. - Subscribe to our Patreon and get access to the PDF, MuseScore, and XML files for all our hymns.
