The League operated with a proportional voting structure, where larger cities held more influence but smaller cities retained representation — a system later studied by European political thinkers and noted for its early constitutional structure. One of the most important discoveries at Xanthos is the Inscribed Pillar, sometimes called the Xanthian Obelisk. Dating to the 4th century BCE, it contains one of the longest known inscriptions in the Lycian language, along with Greek text. This monument has played a major role in helping scholars understand Lycian culture and language. The city is recorded by the Greek historian Herodotus, who described its destruction in the 6th century BCE during the Persian conquest under Harpagus. In 42 BCE, Xanthos was again destroyed during conflict with Roman forces. Despite these catastrophic events, the city was rebuilt both times and later flourished under Roman rule. Many of the visible ruins today — including the theater, Roman baths, agora remains, and Lycian rock-cut tombs — reflect a layered history shaped by Lycian, Persian, Greek, and Roman influence. This cultural blending makes Xanthos an important site for understanding how Anatolian civilizations adapted rather than disappeared. Today, Xanthos and the nearby sanctuary of Letoon form the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Xanthos–Letoon,” recognized for its political significance, inscriptions, and architectural legacy.
