Caesarea Maritima, on the Mediterranean coast, was founded by Herod the Great in the first century BCE and named for Herod’s Roman patron, Augustus Caesar. It was here that Cornelius, the Gentile Centurion, summoned Peter and was baptized (Acts 10). Caesarea was also the site where Paul set sail for Tarsus (Acts 9:30). Later, Paul was again at Caesarea after having been arrested, and to be tried as a Roman citizen and sent to Rome (Acts 21-28). Herod built his palace at Caesarea with his own swimming pool and Caesarea became the seat of the Roman procurators of the province. Herod built the harbor with a breakwater (now under the water) There were public buildings for entertainment, a large theater that could also hold water shows (with a name for entrance and exit passages that would seem unusual today), and a hippodrome for chariot races. An aqueduct was built to carry water beginning at the springs at the foot of Mount Carmel about nine kilometers northeast of Caesarea. There is also a stone inscribed with the name of Pontius Pilate, the only stone found in any archaeological dig with his name on it. (This was the first site our group visited on our Israel pilgrimage.)
