I’m writing and illustrating my own children’s picture book, and this video is where it all started — with a single sketch. After years of reading kids’ books to my own children, I became convinced that something was missing. I wanted stories about courage, imagination, and ordinary characters becoming heroes. So I decided to stop waiting and start making the book myself. In this first episode, I talk through the moment this story clicked: a simple drawing — just a pair of eyes — that became the foundation for an entire picture book world. You’ll see how ideas about water creatures, ancient enemies, and magical landscapes quickly spiraled out of control… and how I learned to slow down, focus, and start small. This video captures the raw beginning of the process: wrestling with story, character design, and creative overwhelm — and discovering that sometimes the best way forward is to draw one thing and build from there. If you’re interested in writing or illustrating a children’s book, character design, visual storytelling, or watching a creative project take shape from nothing, this series is for you. This is the first step in bringing an original picture book to life. 0:00 – Why I Decided to Write and Illustrate a Children’s Book 0:45 – The Problem With Modern Kids’ Stories 1:30 – The First Idea: A World Made of Water 2:15 – When Story Ideas Spiral Out of Control 3:30 – Learning About Loglines and Story Structure 4:20 – Overthinking the World and Characters 5:10 – Focusing on One Thing: Drawing the Eyes 5:45 – Studying How to Draw Water 6:30 – Early Character Design Experiments 6:55 – The Sketch That Changed Everything 7:00 – This Drawing Could Be the Main Character
