Craigtoun House, formerly known as Mount Melville House, is a historic mansion situated near St Andrews in Fife, Scotland. Originally built in 1698 for General George Melville of Strathkinness, the estate underwent significant redevelopment in the early 20th century under the ownership of Dr. James Younger of the renowned brewing family. Architect Paul Waterhouse was commissioned to enhance the grounds, adding features such as the Dutch Village and Cypress Avenue, contributing to the estate’s picturesque landscape . In 1947, Fife County Council acquired the property, transforming the mansion into a maternity hospital and establishing the surrounding grounds as Craigtoun Country Park. The park became a beloved recreational area, featuring attractions like a miniature railway, boating lake, and the ‘Puffin’ Billy’ tractor ride . After the hospital’s closure in 1992, the estate was sold to the Old Course Hotel, which developed the Dukes Golf Course on the western part of the park . Today, Craigtoun House stands as a Category B listed building, reflecting its architectural and historical significance. While the house itself is not open to the public, Craigtoun Country Park continues to serve as a popular destination for both locals and visitors, offering a blend of natural beauty and family-friendly amenities.
