On the 16 December 2023, Luton Town Captain, Tom Lockyer, had a cardiac arrest on the pitch during a Premier League football match. A group of lifesavers rushed to perform CPR and early defibrillation on Tom – Luton Town club medics: Simon Parsell, Chris Phillips and Dr Amos Ogunkoya, as well as medics from AFC Bournemouth and St John’s Ambulance: Dr Mufeed Ni’man, Dr Graig Roberts, Phil Ballett, Abbey Clark, Dean Fernee, Adam Todhunter, and AFC Bournemouth player, Philip Billing. Tom spent five days in hospital and had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) device fitted. Tom became a father for the first time in March 2024, and he knows that the quick intervention to save his life allowed him to see the birth of his daughter. Tom said, “I’m an example of the power of CPR, and how it can save lives. I’m so grateful to the people who saved my life, and that I can have special moments with my family.” Following the incident, Tom backed our campaign to urge the nation to learn CPR for Heart Month in February 2024 and was announced as an Ambassador for BHF.
