Can you tell what gender a Parrotlet baby is once they hatch? And what’s the best age to get your Parrotlet baby from a breeder? As a hatchling? Parrots are either ‘sexually dimorphic’ or ‘sexually monomorphic.’ This means that you can look at the sexually dimorphic parrot species and see whether the parrot is a hen, female, or a cock, a male. Sexually monomorphic parrots have to be DNA’d with a blood test In order to determine their gender because they look exactly the same. Parrotlets are sexually dimorphic. However, this can only be seen in their feathers and all parrots are born without feathers. In order to determine a Parrotlet’s gender, their feathers have to at least grown out to a certain amount so that the feathers can be differentiated. Parrotlets, like all other parrots, are delicate when they hatch and become less delicate as they age. The first couple weeks of life they are fed all of the time by their parents - on order to match this, humans have to feed baby parrots up to 10 times a day! Additionally, parents feed provides an immune system for a baby parrot, which a human-raised parrot doesn’t develop as quickly. Finally, knowing how to hand-feed a baby parrot can be easy when you know how to do so, or very challenging and result in their death if you are inexperienced. For all these reasons, waiting for a Parrotlet or parrot to be weaned or basically and mostly eating on their own is best to ensure that you have a healthy baby. Spending time with any newly weaned baby will still allow you to bond, without having to worry about feeding them by hand. A weaned baby still needs to be watched to make sure that he or she can reach and find their food and is eating when they are brought home, and that is plenty to focus on! —- PARROT BLISS MISSION Mission: Help you create a blissful bond with your parrot- reducing the need for parrot rescues.
