(Lord, I pray, deliver me from death’s everlasting fire on that great Day of Judgement, on that last dreadful day: When the earth and the heav’ns shall shake and tremble, and thou shalt come with thy mighty flaming fire of judgement. Trembling, trembling I stand before thee in fear and dread: thy wrath shall descend on the earth and bring all flesh to desolation. Day of trial, day of judgement, death and destruction, torment and distress: day of anger, day of vengeance, day of mourning, of woe and bitter grief. Rest eternal grant them. Lord our God, we pray to thee, and light perpetual shine ever on them.) Fauré Requiem and other sacred music John Rutter’s Gramophone Award-winning 1984 recording of Fauré’s Requiem, re-released in 2010 at mid-price. The first-ever performance on disc of the work in its intimate original version – famously re-discovered by Rutter in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris after a century of neglect – it remains one of the timeless jewels in the crown of the Collegium catalogue. John Rutter, English composer and conductor, is associated with choral music throughout the world. His recordings with the Cambridge Singers (the professional chamber choir he set up in 1983) have reached a wide global audience, many of them featuring his own music in definitive versions. Among John’s best-known choral works are Gloria, Requiem, Magnificat, Mass of the Children, and Visions, together with many church anthems, choral songs and Christmas carols.
