Kilchurn is a ruined castle located on the northern peninsula of Loch Awe in Argyll. It is on my top 5 list of most picturesque Scottish castles, on par with Eilean Donan or Tioram Castle. Unfortunately, it is in worse condition than these two fortresses. Built around 1450 by clan Campbell of Glenorchy was transformed into a garrison for 200 soldiers in the 17th century. It makes Kilchurn Castle the oldest still-standing barracks in the UK. The castle was a centrepiece of the history of Clan Campbell for 300 years. The huge storm in 1760 left the castle severely damaged and it was abandoned soon after. Initially, the castle was built on a small island, but since the water level in Loch Awe went down in the 19th century, the island became a peninsula and is now accessible on foot. As I mentioned earlier, the castle is incredibly beautifully located. Scenic Loch Awe is surrounded by hills and mountains on its northern tip, where the castle proudly stands. Especially peaks of Cruachan Horseshoe look incredible in the background. The effect is slightly spoiled by the fence around the castle, which makes it slightly less spectacular than it could be. It is due to some assessment work done by Historic Environment Scotland related to loose masonry. Unfortunately, the assessment is taking ages (at least 4 years now) and makes the castle no longer available to the public, which is a real shame, as I heard that views from the main tower are equal to none. I've been hunting for good shots of this castle for a few years now, but there was always something wrong. First I was naively waiting for the fence to be taken down, then the weather was never the best. It doesn't help that the owner of the pastures around the castle is not a fan of drones and doesn't allow starting from his land (I understand he may be worried for his animal's wellbeing). Because of that I had to fly from a larger distance and never had a lot of battery time to film it properly. Finally, thanks to nearly windless weather, I managed to capture the full magnificence of this place (or at least I hope so). There are two ways of appreciating the castle. There is a very big car park at the northern end of the lake, on A85. From the car park, you can take a path under the viaduct to get to the peninsula and see the castle at close range. There is also a viewpoint worth a visit on A819 just before it merges with A85. It offers the vista of the castle and the amazing Cruachan mountains behind it. To fly a drone I recommend using the bank of the lake on the other side.
