This will be my last release for a while. I don't know who I offended, maybe I argued with someone and they sent their legions to downvote my videos. Maybe I reviewed a recent episode of Doctor Who too positively for someone, without mentioning vacuous words like 'woke' or declaring "RIP Doctor Who" bc classic apparently fans “aren’t allowed” enjoy current episodes. Or maybe I advocated for someone who I felt was being belittled unfairly in a way that was unacceptable. This happened recently when I went in to bat for a fellow fan who is religiously or spiritually inclined and expressed being offended by the latest episode of Doctor Who. The reaction to that offence was something I found disrespectful and undignified, and called it out accordingly. Honestly, if someone says they're offended, shut the hell up and listen before judging. No matter whether it's an issue of faith, sexuality, gender, race, (dis-)ability or anything else. If someone is offended, just shut the hell up and listen to what they're saying. Especially if you want to gaslight them into thinking they're being hysterical. History tells us that very few groups are being hysterical when they say they're offended. My research is on sexual violence and I know that many folks aren’t listened to. So just listen. You learn a lot that way - even if it costs you your YouTube channel. It's what the Doctor would do, after all. Either way, it's had a significant effect on my confidence, especially in light of the phenomenal work of actual musicians who do what I do, but far better. I know I'm not very good. And I’m prepared to shut up shop accordingly. Regardless, here is my 'beta' release of The Majestic Tale in a 1970s style. It took many weeks of work. It's a complex track with many instruments, so just 'plugging in' sounds of the 70s didn't work. There's a string element in the original, and I couldn't find anything to substitute that didn't sound terrible. Then I recently re-discovered Don Harper's Doctor Who theme from 1974 (there's a great HQ version available here on YouTube!) and noticed that track had strings. So I kept the strings, even though they weren't routinely used in 1970's Doctor Who. And I ended up working on the track as though it was an experimental electronic release for the 1970s, like that was. However, I found one instrument that didn't sound like it belonged, so I went back to basics, and replaced it with a Oboe/Bassoon combination, and replaced some of the percussion instruments with analogue percussion like a Timpani, but with some of the other percussion tracks emulating a Simmonds electronic kit which wouldn't have sounded out of place in the 1970s. Further, one of the instruments is deliberately programmed to be a vintage 'disco-esque' sound to pay homage to the 'kazoo' like sounds of Malcolm Clarke's "Sea Devils" soundtrack. I used to joke that The Sea Devils sounds like they locked some poor soul in a cupboard with kazoo and told them to make some music, with the resulting soundtrack being the product of that. It's only about 90% complete. I could spend the next few weeks perfecting this, but things aren't lining up well in my personal life, on top of the concerted effort to downvote my videos. I'm not one for venting or complaining about my life publicly, so I'll leave it there. But this means that I don't quite have the stamina required to finish this track in a way that I'm completely happy with, without sacrificing my (almost complete!) PhD. I need to focus on becoming a Doctor in the next couple of months as I'm very close to getting there, even though I'm finding it almost impossible to get things to completion after being at university since 2016! I also apologise for the pops and crackles from YouTube compression, I never figured out how to remove that. Thank you all for your support and encouragement and kind words over the last 11 months. I've relished the intelligent critiques (honestly, I have!) and savoured the compliments to help get me through some difficult days in recent times. I take great strength in knowing that some of my tracks have helped some of you through some tough days. Some of your comments have brought me to tears when I read what effect this music has had on you in your life I may produce more work eventually. The 1980s Doomsday track is almost begging for a remaster, and I've been wondering how to re-score the Second Doctor's speech to Victoria in Tomb of the Cybermen. Now that I have vocal isolation software, that seems more possible than before. As does a remaster of some of my past releases of re-scored scenes with dialogue, now that I can remove the music from an audio track with an acceptable degree of accuracy. Until then, thank you for your subscriptions and support. This isn't goodbye, just a brief 'ciao' until we meet again. I'll exit with a traditional Maori departure, given my indigenous heritage. Haere ra, e hoa ma, Hellsworth.
