Leah Nelson, a 6th grader and founder of the non-profit BecuzIcare11, discusses how she was able to turn one act of kindness into a viral pay it forward phenomenon. She discusses through her curiosity to find way to treat people with kindness she has used technology, social media, and the power of kind acts to build a successful organization helping people all over the world. BecuzIcare11 was created by Leah Nelson in July of 2016 to promote and encourage random acts of kindness, one bracelet at a time. She transformed her love of rainbow loom bracelets into a global movement with a simple message: Do something kind for someone else, give them a bracelet, and encourage them to pay it forward as well. Since then, the program has gone viral receiving over 100 million views of Leah’s random acts of kindness videos on Facebook. BecuzIcare11 has been featured on NBC Nightly News, CBS’ Hidden Heroes, PopSugar, Daily Mail, The New York Times and many other local, national and global media outlets. To date, more than 10,000 bracelets have been created and passed around the globe. BecuzIcare11 now exists around the globe with participants throughout the United States, Brazil, Mexico, Portugal, the UK, South Africa, the Congo, the Philippines, China and Japan. Leah’s goal is to make random acts of kindness something anyone can do. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
