How to deal with harsh highlights in your photos

In this video I'll show you how to deal with harsh highlights in your photos. Ideally at the time of the shoot, you should position and light your model in a way to avoid such harsh highlights, but if you do get harsh lighting, it's not the end of the world and there are some easy things you can do in Photoshop to make your images look better. This video is in two parts. In the first part, we'll bring the highlights down overall in the image. In part two, we'll fix the distracting triangle area on her hand. I'll be putting up a behind-the-scenes video from this shoot on my channel and it was a bit eventful! The location I wanted to use (and which had been fine when I'd been to it previously) was suddenly covered in very deep bogs and pools of muddy water! We therefore found one small spot which was dry and unfortunately the light was quite harsh there. I used the sun as a backlight, brought my exposure down quite far to try not to blow out the highlights and used an off-camera flash to add light to the model from the front. I still thought the lighting looked quite harsh though and felt detail was getting lost in the highlights. I therefore used these Photoshop techniques to recover highlights. I also wanted to fix the distracting triangle of light on her hand. I wanted to keep the effect of the highlights, but just tone them down a bit.
