This video includes highlights from our annual American Trombone Workshop, featuring performances by guest artists Dr. Natalie Mannix, Associate Professor of Trombone at UNT College of Music and Mark Davidson, Principal Trombone of the Utah Symphony Orchestra. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve the nation through our virtual concerts and for the support of the American people. Where are you joining from? Let us know in the comments! -- ATW is one of longest continuous running events of its kind in the nation. The workshop’s mission is to give students, performers, educators, and enthusiasts an opportunity to meet and share ideas, talents, and opinions about the world of trombone. Featured artists regularly include members of leading orchestras like the Boston and San Francisco Symphonies, the New York Philharmonic, and others. 0:00 The first work on the program is Overture to "Colas Breugnon." While Dimitry Kabalevsky’s opera "Colas Breugnon" wasn’t considered a popular success, the overture has become an audience favorite. The overture sets the scene in the Burgundy region of France in the 16th-century, and highlights a title character full of energy and mischief. 11:37 Next up is "Servant of Peace" by Dorothy Gates featuring soloist Dr. Natalie Mannix. Inspired by the life of Swedish diplomat Dag Hammarskjöld who served as Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1953 - 1961. Hammarskjöld was a global figure who stood for hope and peace, and Gates’ composition focuses on the rippling effects of his life’s work. The second movement is the heart of this three movement concerto, with beautifully singing lines in the solo voice. Natalie Mannix is an avid soloist, chamber musician, orchestral performer and educator. She was a member of the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C. for over nine years where she performed with the brass quintet and concert and ceremonial bands. In fall of 2016 she began her current position at the University of North Texas after teaching eight years at Towson University in Baltimore and playing principal trombone in the Delaware Symphony for 14 years. 21:59 Next is the "Trombone Concerto" by the great film composer Nino Rota. Italian composer Nino Rota is likely most known for his music for film, having provided the music to movies of legendary directors like Zeffirelli, Fellini, Visconti. His most famous film score, undoubtedly, accompanies Coppola’s The Godfather, parts one and two, and while the theme from "The Godfather" may be his most recognizable piece of writing, his concert material is worth discovering. He composed concertos for harp, bassoon, horn, flute, and trombone. The finale of his concerto for trombone is Fellini-esque romp, with sharp, rhythmic pulses underneath the soloist’s soaring lines. 26:38 Our final piece is "Rolling Thunder" by Henry Fillmore featuring Mark Davidson. Rolling Thunder is one of the most well known and frequently performed circus marches in the wind band repertoire. As a matter of style, the circus march is less of a march and more of a full sprint, and were sometimes referred to as “screamers” because of the lightning-fast tempos. Rolling Thunder is an exciting show-stopper and has traditionally served as the encore in the final concert of the American Trombone Workshop. Mark Davidson began playing the trombone at age 11 within the Plano, Texas school district music programs before attending the University of North Texas, where he received his Bachelor’s of Music Education in 2006. He went on to attend The Juilliard School and studied with Joseph Alessi, Principal Trombone of the New York Philharmonic. After his training at The Juilliard School, Mark held posts with the San Antonio Symphony as 2nd Trombonist, the Cincinnati Symphony as acting 2nd trombonist, and the Baltimore Symphony as Acting Principal Trombonist. Mark was appointed Principal Trombone of the Utah Symphony Orchestra by Maestro Thierry Fischer in 2015, after previously been appointed as Associate Principal/ 2nd Trombone of the USO in 2013. --- Thank you so much for joining us!
