This is my 2020 remaster of a popular 1973 bootleg amongst Cactus and Skynyrd fans alike that's been available for download since 1998. Remastered using https://www.bandlab.com and Audacity. The band was called Detroit, but is often referred to as the Band Detroit (so as not to be confused with the City of Detroit in Michigan, which was the band's namesake). It was originally founded by Johnny "Bee" Badanjek and Mitch Ryder in 1971 as an offshoot of the Detroit Wheels. Mitch's lineup had one album, which was self-titled and produced by Paramount Records. When Mitch left, Rusty Day from Cactus stepped in, and the rest of the band's lineup changed drastically over the course of 1972-1974. This gig the Rusty Day incarnation did, recorded sometime during the year of 1973, was a concert done presumably at the 20Grande Driftwood Lounge in Detroit, Michigan (according to the tape's original label). The original master tape was recorded by Greg Arama. Cassie Gaines gave the Gaines' copy of the tape to Allen Collins. Allen preserved the tape until he later gave it to Steve Reynolds, who eventually handed it to Kent Griffith. Kent digitized the tape to preserve the recording from potential loss. The digitized recording was eventually remastered by Andrew Scott. The original master tape was eventually stolen from Rusty's estate by Michael Vee. The Gaines' copy of the tape has been in Judy Van Zant Jenness's possession since 1998. Dedicated to the memory of the entire band's lineup: Rusty Day (February 1st 1946 - June 3rd 1982) - Vox; Harmonica; Percussion Steve Gaines (September 14th 1949 - October 20th 1977) - Vox; Les Paul; Slide Bill Hodgson (March 15th 1930 - February 6th 1984) - Vox; Stratocaster Nathaniel Peterson (???? - September 25th 2023) - Bass Terry Emery (???? - December 5th 2020) - Keys Ted "T-Mel" Smith (November 4th 1931 - December 25th 2006) - Drums Tracklist: 01. No Money Down [Chuck Berry] 0:00 02. Highway [Rusty Day] 5:32 03. The World Is Round [Rusty Day] 12:00 04. The Grip Of The Grape [Rusty Day] 17:35 05. I Gotta Move [Rusty Day] 21:32 06. Sympathy [Bill Hodgson/Gordon Maslowski] 1:29:38 "I Gotta Move,” originally done by Rusty Day & the Midnighters in the form of a ''45 single that ran locally throughout Garden City, Michigan. The original version was (somehow?) not a success. Rusty joined the Amboy Dukes two years later. "Fishcake Breath," was later performed by Crawdad, and eventually appeared on Steve Gaines's "I Know A Little (Live)” album, renamed, "Piano Boogie". Some of Crawdad’s original fans remember the song as, “Terry’s Blues," or, "Unnamed Boogie in C." "Bro. Bill," was originally done by Rusty Day's band, Cactus, who were rightfully hailed by many as "America's Led Zeppelin". Besides Rusty, the band also featured Carmine Appice/Frankie Robbins/Bobby Caldwell/Gary Moffatt on drums, Jim McCarty/Steve Dansby on guitar, & Tim Bogert/John Sauter/Mondo Thomas on bass. "Footprints in the Snow," was later performed by Crawdad with Steve's lyrics instead of Rusty's. This version of the song, called, "Take My Time," appears on their "One in the Sun" album, which was credited as a Steve Gaines solo album to attract Lynyrd Skynyrd fans. "Don't Wanna Lose," was later performed by Crawdad, and appeared on Steve Gaines's "Okie Special" CD, albeit horribly sped-up during the transfer from reel to CD. _______ NOTICE: If you see any comments by a Michael Valentino, or Mick E. Vee claiming anything said in this description is false, don't listen to him. Nobody takes him seriously. He's a known liar and a thief who stole things from Rusty & Jocko Day's estate, which is ran by Rusty's best friend, whose name I will respectfully protect. Michael Vee claims to be Rusty's nephew, when he's actually of no relation at all, according to familysearch or ancestry.com), and I've been told Vee wasn't even born yet until eleven years AFTER the murder of Rusty & Jocko! He has made enemies with everyone he's ever encountered throughout his life, and has always twisted and turned the truth in everything he's ever said relating to Rusty Day. Vee sends empty death threats to those in Rusty's circle, is all bark and no bite, and his enemies include other members of Cactus, friends of the Cactus family, and fans.
