Join us for a day trip from Tokyo where we visit Mount Takao (高尾山) to enjoy some hiking and a green escape from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. We enjoy some unique Japanese street food snacks that you can purchase while visiting Mount Takao (高尾山). After researching Tokyo day trip one of the most interesting options was going to Mount Takao. We had spent quite a bit of time in both Osaka and Tokyo and we were both craving a day out in nature. In order for us to get to Mount Takao we took the Keio Line directly from Shinjuku station which only cost 381 Yen and took 50 minutes. Upon arriving we decided to grab a bite to eat opting for Soba noodles and udon. To get up Mount Takao you have three different options. You can hike the entire way, go on a cable car or take a lift. The cable car and lift are both 480 Yen and we decided to go with the cable car on the way up and lift on the way down. In hindsight we feel the lift is a much better option for taking in the scenery without the crowds. To hike to the top of Mount Takao it only took 40 minutes and we got to visit some fascinating temples along the way before being rewarded with incredible views. On the way back we decided to try some unique Japanese street food snacks that you can find at Mount Takao. We had the following: 1) Tenguyaki (Angry bird shaped shells stuffed with red bean paste for 140 Yen 2) Ice cream with vanilla and a nutty orange flavor in a special cone 3) Matcha cheese tart with red bean paste - 250 Yen each. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our day trip to Mount Takao from Tokyo and would highly recommend it to all of you guys. Tokyo Day Trip to Hike Mount Takao (高尾山) + Japanese Street Food Snacks Travel Video: 🌳 Mount Takao (高尾山) Day Trip: Tokyo Nature Escape, Food Tour & Hiking Adventure! 🚋🥢🍦【Ultimate Japan Guide】 🌞 Morning Escape from Tokyo: Heading to Mount Takao Good morning from Tokyo! After two weeks immersed in the bustling city, the need for fresh air and nature was strong. Mount Takao (高尾山), about an hour west of Tokyo, is the perfect city break for anyone craving greenery and a breath of mountain air. We hopped on the train—navigating a “sardine session” on the Tokyo subway during rush hour—to begin our adventure. 🚆 Getting There: Train Rides & Early Morning Rush Route: From central Tokyo to Shinjuku (新宿区), then onward on the Keio Line. Cost: 381 Yen per person—great value for escaping the city! Experience: Packed trains at rush hour (expect to be squished!) but things relax as you leave Tokyo and join other hikers. 🍲 Brunch at Mount Takao: Soba Noodles & Tempura First Stop: Upon arriving, we searched for breakfast in the quiet morning streets, eventually settling on a restaurant just opening for the day. Menu Highlights: Soba Noodles (そば) served hot with mountain mushrooms and chives. Classic Tempura: Sweet potato tempura, crunchy and sweet, paired with buckwheat noodles. Prices: Around 850-1300 Yen per person—fresh, filling, and perfect for fueling a hike. Impressions: The meal was hearty, healthy, and served with beautiful wooden spoons—ideal for a mountain adventure. 🚡 Cable Car & Chair Lift: Scenic Rides Up the Mountain Choices: Two options to ascend—Japan’s steepest cable car or a charming two-seater lift (like a swing!). Tickets: 480 Yen per person, one way. Experience: The cable car whisks you partway up, while the chair lift is open-air, relaxed, and ideal for couples or anyone wanting panoramic forest views. Scenery: Towering ancient trees, lush greenery, and crisp mountain air—an instant contrast to Tokyo’s skyscrapers. 🥾 Hiking to the Summit: Temples, Trails & Steps Hike: A gentle, shaded forest path with stops at temples and little shops selling ice cream and souvenirs. Challenge: Climbing steep steps to reach the 599.15m summit—burning off brunch! Temple Rituals: Try ringing temple bells or lifting stones for good fortune. Summit Success: Enjoy breathtaking views and celebrate with a high five! 🍡 Street Food & Sweets on Mount Takao Tenguyaki: Local specialty, similar to taiyaki but shaped like a mythical Tengu bird, filled with chunky red bean paste (140 Yen). Ice Cream: Enjoyed a “mystery flavor” swirl—vanilla plus something tropical and nutty. Perfect on a sunny day. Matcha Cheese Tart: Decadent dessert with layers of matcha, cheese, and a hint of red bean (250 Yen)—delicious and unique! ⛷️ The Chair Lift Down: Forest Views & Fresh Air Experience: The chair lift back down is scenic, relaxing, and a bit thrilling at first—no safety bar, just your balance! Nature: Glide through verdant treetops, spot bugs (and maybe dodge a few!), and appreciate Japan’s natural beauty. Comparison: The open-air lift is a favorite over the crowded cable car—a fun, date-like way to end the hike.
