Chankonabe contains dashi or chicken broth soup base with sake/mirin with chicken (skin left on), tofu, vegetables (daikon and bok choy) and other types of ingredients. It is healthy because it is protein rich and filling. If you're in Tokyo, Japan we'd recommend you try it! Here is everything you'll need to go and visit yourself. Today’s video is all about immersing ourselves in sumo culture right here in Tokyo’s legendary Ryogoku district! Our day is packed with authentic sumo-themed activities: we’ll try a sumo wrestler’s traditional meal, visit a sumo restaurant (with a real dohyo ring!), and tour the Sumo Museum to learn about this iconic Japanese sport. Join us for a deep dive into Japan’s most powerful tradition! 🚉 Arriving at Ryogoku: Heart of Sumo in Tokyo Destination: Ryogoku Station, the epicenter of sumo culture in Tokyo. Ambiance: The area is filled with sumo-themed restaurants, shops, and even the famed sumo stables. First Attempt: We tried to visit a sumo stable in the morning (where wrestlers train from 7:30-10:30am), but found it closed—shutters down! Not to worry, there are plenty more sumo experiences waiting. 🍲 Sumo Restaurant: Chanko Nabe (ちゃんこ鍋) Feast Where: Hananomai Ryogoku—a famous sumo-themed restaurant right by the station, complete with an actual sumo ring in the center! Vibe: Cool sumo art on the walls, authentic wooden seating, purple cushions, and even a little earthquake rumble courtesy of the trains passing above. The Menu: Chanko Nabe Set: A protein-heavy sumo stew, loaded with chicken (skin on, for extra calories), tofu, egg, and veggies, cooked at the table in your own hot pot. Tempura & Sashimi Set: Crisp shrimp, mushrooms, fish tempura, plus tuna and salmon sashimi, salad, pickled veggies, miso soup, and ginger tofu. How to Eat: Dip, scoop, mix, and enjoy! Don’t forget the rice—sumo wrestlers bulk up by eating hearty portions of stew, rice, and sometimes even beer. Food Review: Chanko Nabe: Rich chicken broth with hints of miso and soy, protein-packed and filling, though not the spiciest Japanese dish. Extra chicken skin and egg add flavor and calories—just like the wrestlers eat. Tempura & Sashimi: Far superior to grocery store tempura—crisp, flavorful, and packed with shrimp. Sashimi is melt-in-your-mouth smooth. Ambiance: The restaurant fills with locals and salarymen, not just tourists, which is always a good sign. Cozy atmosphere, great music, and quick, friendly service. 🥚 Dropping the Egg & Hot Pot Rituals Hot Pot Action: Drop a raw egg into the bubbling chanko nabe, let it poach in the broth, and enjoy! Fun Fact: In some restaurants, leftover broth gets a second life—noodles are added at the end for “round two.” 🤼 Hoping for a Sumo Match (But Not Today) Expectation: The restaurant sometimes hosts sumo demonstrations right in the ring, but there was no performance today. No schedule posted—just luck of the draw! Price: 2,700 yen for two sets (~$25 USD total). Hearty, filling, and a must-try experience for sumo fans or foodies. 🏛️ Sumo Museum: A Glimpse into Sumo History Quick Visit: The Sumo Museum is located just a short walk from the restaurant. Inside: Traditional sumo artwork and fan memorabilia. Displays of champion photos and historical lists of famous wrestlers. No photography allowed, but fascinating for a quick cultural overview. Reality Check: The museum is quite small; you can see everything in under 10 minutes. Worth a look if you’re in the area, especially before a sumo match or after a sumo meal. 🛍️ Sumo Gift Shop: Perfect Souvenirs What’s Inside: Sumo-themed t-shirts, specialty foods, and quirky gifts. Items range from foods sumo wrestlers eat to cute souvenirs for fans. 📌 Sumo Day Wrap-Up: What We Loved & Learned Sumo Food: Chanko nabe is filling, healthy, and an essential part of sumo wrestler culture, but don’t expect bold flavors—it’s functional food for gaining mass! The Vibe: Ryogoku is the sumo capital of Tokyo, with restaurants run by ex-wrestlers and decor that immerses you in sumo tradition. Museum & Shopping: Fun stops if you’re already in the neighborhood, but not “destination” attractions on their own. Japanese Sumo Food: Eating Chankonabe Stew (ちゃんこ鍋) | Tokyo, Japan Travel Food Video
