I don't know what the process was for the overall festival estimates, so I can't speak to their accuracy. Based on local examples, I calculated the maximum parallel parking density at 4 cars per 25m of road. I measured the the streets I observed cars parked on the day (making some assumptions about some back streets) and came up with 1000m of main road parking, and 1700m of back street parking. For the 1700m of back streets, 4 cars per 25m is 272 cars, x2 for both sides of the road is 544 cars. I then studied an example street to work out how much of the street length is not available for parking (mostly due to driveways and intersections) and came to a figure of 28%. (I did not take into account street parking space taken up by cars that are usually parked there by residents – this would probably be significant for back streets). So we reduce the 544 cars by 28% to 392 parked cars for 1700m of back street. For the 1000m of main road I altered the formula slightly, because the main road we're talking about has hardly any driveways on one side. I calculated 160 cars per side (as per the above working), then reduced it by the standard 28% on one side, but only 5% on the other, which gives us a total for of 268 cars for 1000m. On top of the street parking, I observed cars filling certain designated car parks around the town, adding up to around 180 additional cars. So 392 from back streets, +268 for main road, + 180 for car parks gives us 840 parked cars. With an average of 3 people per car, that's 2520 people. The estimated festival crowds are 10,000-15,000 people, so car travelers account for roughly 25.2%-16.8% of total festival attendees.
