Candy Corn (the last of my Halloween rescues) is an orphan Grey-Headed Flying-Fox whose mum was electrocuted on power lines while Candy survived - being insulated by her mum's fur. She's about 10 days old. The energy company gets our bats down for us using a cherrypicker. Yay Ausgrid. Candy Corn is doing well and is in care with another carer. Baby bats on power lines often have burns. If they're suckling from their mums at the time of the shock, they may have oral burns. If their wing or foot is touching some of mum's skin they may have membrane or toe burns. Some burns are fatal, but usually they're just poor feeders because of their mouths and take quite some time to start doing better. If the babies stay on power lines, they suffer dehydration, and heat stress. If it's cooler weather they may survive for days. Flies lay eggs on the dead mum and when the maggots hatch, they get on the baby and eat it alive. It's a pretty horrible death
