Winter on our small family farm in South Jersey has been especially bitter this year — and as first-time chicken owners, keeping our flock warm and dry has been our top priority. In this video, we’re sharing the 3 practical ways we are keeping our chickens warm during extreme cold weather: • Installing removable wind-blocking panels around our chicken run • Creating a heated, circulating water system to prevent freezing • Using the deep litter method inside our coop for natural insulation and passive heat We currently have 9 hens (including 3 beautiful Buff Brahmas with feathered feet) and one rooster, Cluck Norris. Because this is our first winter with chickens, we’ve been learning so much from experienced chicken owners and homesteaders who generously share their tips online — and we hope this video helps someone else keep their flock comfortable this winter. Cold weather chicken care is about more than warmth — it’s about ventilation, dry bedding, frostbite prevention, and consistent access to water. We walk through what’s working for us, what challenges we’ve noticed (like dust buildup), and how we designed our setup to be flexible if temperatures suddenly change. If you raise backyard chickens, homestead, or are preparing your flock for winter, we hope this gives you ideas and encouragement. Leave your winter chicken tips in the comments — we’re still learning and love hearing what works for other flocks! Thanks for supporting our small farm life and following along with our journey as first-year chicken keepers. 🐔❄️
