Welcome to another episode in our Lost Railway Towns series. In this video, we travel to the Yorkshire seaside town of Withernsea, once a bustling destination for holidaymakers arriving by train. Titled “The End of the Line: Withernsea’s Railway History”, this episode explores the town’s rich railway heritage, the importance of the line to its tourism and economy, and what remains of the Withernsea railway station and trackbed today. Opened in the 1850s and closed during the Beeching cuts of the 1960s, the Hull and Holderness Railway once connected Withernsea to the wider UK rail network. We’ll uncover how the closure of this vital line impacted the town, and take a look at the forgotten infrastructure still visible in the streets and landscape today. Withernsea is a small seaside town on the East Yorkshire coast, known for its sandy beaches, distinctive inland lighthouse, and once-thriving status as a Victorian holiday destination. Also a prominent feature is the remains of the pier, which no longer stands in any form apart from the decorative towers on the entrance. If you're passionate about railway history, abandoned railways, Beeching closures, or the lost transport networks of the UK, this video is a must-watch.
