Sultan Ahmed Mosque, Istanbul (The Blue Mosque) in Istanbul turkey January 2023 Undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful and magnificent buildings and sights in Istanbul and Turkey is the Sultan Ahmed Mosque or the Blue Mosque, which was built by the order of Sultan Ahmed I and is known by the same name, Sultan Ahmed. Sultan Ahmed Mosque has another distinctive feature, and that is the existence of 6 minarets in the mosque; Sultan Ahmed is the first mosque built with 6 minarets in Turkey. The exterior and extraordinary view of this mosque includes 5 domes, with a waterfall-like arrangement, with eight smaller domes around it. The western part of the mosque is known as the Blue Mosque because blue color is used a lot in the interior design paintings. Nevertheless, this painting inside the mosque was not part of the original interior decoration and today it has been removed from the interior decoration; Therefore, the interior decoration of the mosque is no longer exclusively blue. Sultan Ahmad Mosque of Istanbul is located in Fatih and Sultan Ahmed neighborhood. There is no entrance fee to visit Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul and it is free. The Blue Mosque is the only mosque in Istanbul that has six minarets. When it was first built, this provoked hostility. The reason being that, at that time, Mecca was the only temple with six minarets. Therefore, many in the Muslim community saw it as disrespect to the Kaaba (Ka’bah). To make amends, Sultan Ahmed I financed a seventh minaret for the mosque in Mecca. Despite being Istanbul’s number one tourist attraction – it draws 5-million visitors annually, the Blue Mosque is still a working mosque. It is open every day of the year but closes for 90 minutes during prayer time and for two hours during Friday noon prayers. When visiting, make sure you dress respectfully. You must cover your legs and shoulders.
