(6 Feb 1998) Natural Sound Declaring America's alliance with Great Britain is strong, President Clinton hosted Prime Minister Tony Blair at an official White House dinner on Thursday. For his part, Blair says the shared values and understanding between the countries would allow them to solve problems with other nations, an apparent reference to Iraq. Even Secret Service agents collected autographs to the hot-ticket White House dinner held in honour of the visiting British prime minister and his wife. All told, 240 guests packed the East Room for a meal of grilled salmon filet and honey-mango glazed chicken. Pastry chefs scrambled to assemble the dessert cookie tray after a special-order chocolate mold of London's Big Ben didn't turn up in the mail until Thursday morning. The gala was given only official status, because state dinners are reserved for heads of state, not prime ministers. Sir Elton John and Stevie Wonder provided the entertainment at the official do. SOUNDBITE: "We can stand together against tyrants, we can help peace flourish from Bosnia to Northern Ireland to the Middle East. We continue to open our minds, our hearts and our societies to new ideas and new possibilities. Mr prime minister, you are breeding new life into politics and restoring faith in ancient principles of liberty so dear to every citizen of your realm. Throughout our histories our people have reinforced each other in the living class room of democracy." SUPER CAPTION: US President Bill Clinton SOUNDBITE: "But what binds us together, you know, is more than history and is greater than our language and is deeper than our mutual self-interest. It is a genuine shared understanding of what drives and motivates the human spirit, the striving to do and to be better, the great values of freedom and progress and justice that are the values that have motivated the best in my country throughout the ages and motivated the best in America today."
